How Pregnancy Weeks Are Counted
Pregnancy week numbers can sound more complicated than they are. The confusion usually comes from two phrases that describe the same point in time: completed weeks and the week you are currently in.
The short version
This calendar uses completed weeks. It counts only the full seven-day blocks that have passed since the starting date used for the estimate.
- Days 0–6 = 0 completed weeks
- Days 7–13 = 1 completed week
- Day 140 = 20 completed weeks, or 20w 0d
- Day 141 = 20 completed weeks and 1 day, or 20w 1d
The helpful distinction: at 20 completed weeks, you are in your 21st week. Both descriptions can be true.
Why two calculators may disagree
Some calendars display the number of full weeks completed. Others label the seven-day period currently underway. That can create a one-week difference even when both tools are counting from the same date.
There can also be a difference if the tools start from different information, such as a due date in one place and the first day of a last period in another.

What if I do not know the date of my last period?
You can start with a due date or estimated conception date instead. The result is still a planning estimate.
Why does the calendar say 0 weeks?
During days 0–6, a full seven-day week has not passed yet, so the completed-weeks number is 0.
Does 36 weeks mean I am in week 36?
On this site, 36 weeks means 36 full weeks have passed. In “week currently in progress” language, that is the 37th week.
Can this calculate an exact due date?
It can produce an estimate from the date you provide. It is not a clinical dating tool and does not replace the date given by your healthcare provider.
